Vermont's Grafton-It's the 'real thing'
" I am sitting in my
room Barrett House, which the manager here at The Old Tavern at Grafton told me was once
occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joel. Rudyard Kipling and his wife honeymooned here as
well, testimony to the broad range of characters who have, at one time or another,
succumbed to the summer charms of Grafton. But this 200-year-old restored village is no
celebrity resort, nor is it the kind of place where teen-age girls dressed in colonial
garb and Topsiders guide you around. Though its neat white houses and maple-shaded lanes
appear to be some kind of idealized New England village, Grafton prides itself on being
the real thing - a town where real people go about their business every day - towing hay
from a nearby field, returning overdue library books, stopping for a paper in the general
store, or picking up mail and gossip at the post office. "
